What is wisdom?

Jas 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

The word translated “wisdom” in this passage is sophia. Sophia is found 49 times in the New Testament. Its meanings include human wisdom as acquired by acuteness and experience, scientific learning, interpreting with sage advice, discernment, or management skill; meanings can also include supreme intelligence as from God.

The English word “wisdom” includes numerous meanings but can be summed up essentially the same as the its Greek counterpart, sophia.

This post is an excerpt (Question 5.1) from my book Ask James one.
